I worked with Dr. Kulik at a psychiatric hospital about seven years ago. I must admit that he wasn't the best fit for our fast-paced crisis unit, but I'll always be glad that I dropped my own work to help show him where to find information or how to enter electronic provider notes. He was the most compassionate medical professional with whom I worked at that hospital, out of at least a dozen. I still think of him every once in a while, but I thought of him today because I received the calendar of events for the Phoenix Symphony. Dr. Kulik had season tickets to the symphony when I worked with him. Every few weeks, he would say "Matthew, would you like a pair of tickets to the show for this weekend? My wife just isn't up to it lately." I was so grateful! I loved the shows, but I wasn't making much money at the time, and I never would have been able to afford tickets to those shows, much less to the 13th row, like the ones he gave me! I always wrote him a thank you note to show my gratitude. I always wished I would have stood up to my coworkers who didn't appreciate the time he took to listen to our patients. But I will always honor Dr. Kulik by practicing the patience that he did when working with those afflicted by mental illness.
