Obituary of Bertrand J. Thompson
Bertrand John Thompson, 88, of Elk Lake, Waymart, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, January 19, 2021. He is survived by his wife, the former Beverly Joan Downs.
Born July 18, 1932 in New Britain, Connecticut, he was the son of the late James Alonzo Thompson and Alma Otilia (Hellander) Thompson.
Bertrand graduated from Upsala College and earned a Master's degree in Mathematics from Columbia University. He was an Air Force veteran and an oceanographer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He also worked at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France developing global tsunami early warning systems. Later in his career, he worked with the US Navy mapping the ocean currents that flow below the surface to the sea floor.
He is also survived by his three children: Bertrand (Randy) John Thompson, Jr., Wayne Arthur Thompson, and Lisa Marie Thompson. And is survived by six grandchildren: Ryan Thompson, Erik Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Derek Thompson, Connor Thompson, Hunter Thompson and two great-grandchildren: Ben Thompson and Rylie Thompson.
A celebration of his life will be held on a future date and will be held at the convenience of the family.
