Obituary of Dr. Jay E. Long

Dr. Jay E. Long, 83, of Honesdale, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2022 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, after an illness. His beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Ruth (Shoop) Long preceded him in death on February 28, 2022. Born June 18, 1938 in Ross Township, Luzerne County, PA, he was the son of the late McKinley and Hazel (Edwards) Long. Jay graduated from Lehman High School in 1955. He went on to study at Bloomsburg State Teachers College and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1959, and his Master’s in 1964. A lifelong educator, Jay earned his Doctor of Education degree from Temple University in 1988. He also studied theological studies at Baptist Bible College, and graduate studies at the University of Scranton. Dr. Long’s professional experience included teaching at Selinsgrove High School and Penn Manor High School in Millersville. For 11 years, he served as Pastor of Mehoopany Baptist Church. He was a professor at Baptist Bible College and Graduate School for 26 years. Dr. Long was a member of numerous professional organizations including Delta Pi Epsilon Graduate Honor Society Graduate Honor Society. He was listed “Who’s Who in American Education,” Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” and “America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals.” His publications include articles in professional journals and magazines, including a monograph he edited for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Dr. Long wrote for various newspapers and served on the editorial board for an English grammar textbook. A member of Tabernacle Bible Church in Honesdale, he was a faithful Christian and servant of Jesus Christ. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him. He is survived by a son, Brent Long and his wife Carol of Memphis, TN; and a daughter, Brenda Santoli of Honesdale; two granddaughters, Kirstin and Kayla. Jay was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, McKinley Long, Jr., Donald Long, Charles Long, Doris Ferrey, and Lillian Iverson. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 29 at 12:00 Noon at the Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove Street, Honesdale, PA with Pastor John Banks officiating. Friends may visit on Friday from 10:30-11:45 AM in the church. Burial and the Graveside Service will be on Monday, May 2, at 11:30 AM in Elan Memorial Park Cemetery, 5595 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815 with Pastor Brad Iverson officiating. All attending on Monday are asked to go directly to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jay’s memory to Tabernacle Bible Church, 455 Grove Street, Honesdale, PA 18431. Arrangements are entrusted to Edward R.
