Obituary of Beulah M. Smith

Beulah M. Smith, 100, of Clinton Township, Waymart, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday morning, May 27, 2022 at home. She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis J. Smith in 1976. Born on February 9, 1922 at home in Fallsdale, Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. and Bessie L. (Rolston) Eltz. Beulah graduated from Damascus High School, valedictorian of her class in 1938 at age 16. She soon married, and together, she and Lewis raised their family on the farm on Smith Road. A diligent lady, Beulah worked beside her husband on the farm, cared for the livestock, milk route, hayfields and gardens too. She was widely known as a quiet and faithful Christian woman who willingly looked after the needs of others in her family and community; she served as an elected Auditor of Clinton Township for several years. For the past 82 years, Beulah was a steadfast member of South Clinton Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and church Treasurer for many of those years. She hosted the Good News Club at her home and church, working with Child Evangelism Fellowship to instill God’s word, and the promise of salvation through Jesus in the hearts of countless youth. After the death of her husband, Beulah went to work at the Salvation Army’s Ladore Lodge in Waymart where she served for many years as the laundress; she loved her years there and continued to work until just a few years ago. Beulah had an impeccable work ethic and was patient and careful to keep everything neat and tidy; she mowed her own lawn and continued to drive well into her nineties. Her family will continue the tradition of making her famous macaroni and cheese and chocolate cake with boiled icing. Beulah’s gentle and humble example of living life with a true servant’s heart will remain a reminder to all who were blessed to know her. She is survived by three children, Ronald Smith and his wife Patricia, Gene Smith and his wife Carmelita, and Nancy Payne and her husband Richard, all of Waymart; a son-in-law, Elmer Bender of Waymart; two sisters, Alice Mae Gries of Waymart, formerly of Damascus, and Bette M. Kimble and her husband Frederick of Brooksville, FL; 10 grandchildren, Debbie Bates, Mark Petrilak, Chris Petrilak, Jimmy Smith, Lewis Smith, Jaime Long, Bobby Smith, Wade Tallman, Bryan Tallman, and Neil Tallman, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene Bender in 2017; a grandson, Thomas James Smith in 1997; and brothers and sisters, Ivan Edward Eltz, Vernon L. Eltz, Clyde A. Eltz, and Evelyn E. Howell. The Funeral will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Ladore Lodge, 398 South Street, Waymart, PA with Pastor Rand Kizer officiating. Friends may visit on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Jenkins-Howell Funeral Home, Inc., Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. Interment will be on Wednesday in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners. Pallbearers will be Beulah's grandsons.
