Obituary of Walter L. Ogden

Walter L. “Scottie” Ogden, 96, of South Canaan passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, February 15, 2022 at home, after an illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 75 ½ years, the former Jean R. Reed. Born August 10, 1925 in Herrick Center, he was the son of the late Walter Scott Ogden and Bessie Leila Curtis. Scottie attended school in Herrick Center and graduated from Pleasant Mount High School. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Marines and was a devoted veteran of World War II. While in the service, he trained in electronics and aviation and carried those skills with him throughout his life. In August of 1946, he returned home from active duty. One month later, on September 1, 1946, he married the love of his life, Jean. Music was just one gift that helped define Scottie and Jean; together, they sang and played at countless weddings and special events through the years. An excellent mechanic, he owned and operated Scottie’s Service Station in South Canaan. Always minded to help others, he donated many gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Scottie faithfully attended and supported the First Presbyterian Church of Waymart. He proudly maintained dual membership in the American Legion in Pleasant Mount and Hamlin. Scottie was a Past Master, and the oldest living member of the Salem Lodge #330 Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Northeasters Barbershop Chorus, and was a founding member of the Barbershop Quartet, “The Stourbridge Line” which was near and dear to his heart. He enjoyed a long career in aviation as a private pilot, and also supported the Young Eagles flying from Cherry Ridge Airport. Scottie will be remembered as one of the finest men our community was ever blessed to have among us. He is also survived by a daughter, Julia Pisall and her husband Robert; and a son, Louis Ogden; two grandchildren: Scott Pisall and Emily Pisall; and several nieces and nephews. Scottie was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebecca Jean Pisall; and brothers and sisters: Clelland Ogden, William Ogden, Evalyn Burdick, Frances Blackman, Muriel Reynolds. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 22, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Ladore Lodge, 398 South Street, Waymart, PA with Pastor Wendy D’Agostino officiating. Services will include a masonic funeral service and military honors. Friends may call on Monday, February 21 from 1-3 PM in the Chapel at Ladore Lodge, 398 South Street, Waymart. Interment will be private in East Canaan Cemetery, South Canaan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Scottie’s memory to the Northeasters Barbershop Chorus Scholarship Fund, the local chapter of the Wayne Pike Chapter of the American Red Cross, or a local charity supporting those affected by cancer. Arrangements are entrusted to Edward R. Howell, Funeral Director, Jenkins-Howell Funeral Home, Inc. 269 Belmont Street, Waymart, PA 18472. www.JenkinsHowellFuneralHome.com
